VICTORIAN ALBUM OF 48 CHINESE RICE PAINTINGS. Circa 1880.
This Victorian Album, with a hand-written dedication on the opening page, contains 48 individual Chinese Rice Paper or Pith Paintings. They date from circa 1880.
The paintings include Chinese Theatricals, The Cries of Hong Kong including The Street Barber, a Fowl Seller, a Vegetable Hawker, a Melon Dealer and Scroll Painters, and Tea Culture.
As can be seen from the photographs, some of the paintings have corners missing and other wear and tear and all have been fixed to the backing paper with, what appears to be, old-fashioned glue.
