FOLK ART MODEL SHIP MADE FROM SALT. Circa 1880
Possibly made in the North West of England this amazing Folk Art Model of a Ship dates from circa 1880.
Such models, made from wood and string, were placed in the flow of salty water so, over a period of time, the white salt crystals would adhere to the surfaces.
This model has been mounted in a purpose-made glass and wood case, complete with carrying handle.
Over the years some of the salt crystals have dropped off and lay on the cotton wool floor but the overall effect is still very eye-catching.
