VICTORIAN MAJOLICA MONKEY WALL POCKET. Circa 1880
This unusual Victorian Majolica Wall Pocket dates from circa 1880.
The climbing Monkey is holding a large Coconut Shell which would hold a small arrangement of flowers, foliage or small fruit.
The Wall Pocket is marked to the bottom left corner with the impressed initials W & R within a diamond-shaped lozenge. Opinion is divided as to whether this is the mark of the Longton, Staffordshire Potters Wayte & Ridge or the London Importers Wittman & Roth. Either way he looks impressive hung on the wall.
The condition is good. The bottom right corner of the tree bark has been reglued and overpainted.
