GEORGIAN SAMPLER. ANNE BENTLEY AGED 10. 'THE YEAR WELL SPENT'. Circa 1820
This well-detailed and finely-worked Georgian Sampler, framed behind non-reflective glass, dates from around 1820.
It is signed on the canvas, in the bottom right corner, Anne Bentley at School. ‘In Her 10th Year’ is worked in stitches beneath the horse and rider.
The Verse reads:
The Year Well Spent
The year with prayer and praise begun
Each morning, noon, and setting sun
Will safely guide the spirit through
And introduce it to the new
Will rightly spend her moments given
All earth shall be exchanged for heaven
The stitches are worked on a very fine canvas. There are a few signs of wear to this cloth but these do not detract from the overall appearance.
