WELSH MINER’S NAIVE FOLK ART WOOLWORK c1910

This naive Folk Art WOOLWORK, framed and behind glass, comes with Provenance and a story.  It depicts The Crucifixion of Christ.  The back of the picture tells the story.

’By Walter Epton circa 1910.  Born in South Petherton, Somerset 1875.  Coal Miner killed underground by being chopped up by runaway trucks in a Welsh Mine November 7th 1914 and buried in Bedwelty Cemetery November 12th 1914.

A religious man who always carried a bible.  He left five children all under 10 years old.   4 sons and 1 daughter (Mary Elizabeth Epton (24/04/1905 – 24/06/1995) who kept the picture until her death.

Picture reframed by grandson Cliff Whittingham (January 28th 1989).  Could smell coal fires and found candle wax spots on the canvas creating a strong link to the past,
